FAQ's
Below is some of our frequently asked questions.
Q: What should I expect from a band‑project session?
A: At The Band Project, each session is designed to be fun, inclusive and music‑focused. We warm with a jam at the start of the session, then we look at the songs we’ll be working on. Then move into full band rehearsals & workshops to build your skills. We aim to develop musicianship in a band environment, and the goal over the term is to work towards a live performance or a recording of the songs you’ve rehearsed.
Typical session format:
-
Warm‑up jam
-
Song preparation/orientation of the material
-
Performance workshop (to hone your musicianship skills)
-
Full band rehearsals
-
Planning for the next session (what to practice, how we’ll move forward)
Q: How many in a session?
A: We only take a maximum of 12 people per session. Please be mindful that if you play a popular instrument such as guitar, there may be other guitar players there. This is great though as it gives us so much more scope and depth to what we can do. Think "The Eagles" as they sometimes go out with 4 or 5 guitar players :). If you play a secondary instrument or sing, then your services will be greatly needed.
Q: Do I need to bring my own instrument?
A: Yes — ideally, you bring your own instrument. It’s important to work on your own gear so you feel comfortable and confident.
Guitarist - bring an amp if using an electric guitar. The same goes for an electro-acoustic guitar.
Bass - bring a small amp.
Drums - Bring a small set-up kit to start with if you have one. If you have an electric kit, then this can also be used.
Vocals - please bring your own mic (if you have one). If not, then we can supply.
Keys - bring your on keyboard along and an amp if you have one.
We will supply a small PA set‑up.
If for any reason you don’t have your own instrument or you are missing something, talk to us and we’ll see what we can arrange.
Q: What level of ability should I be?
A: We welcome musicians who play any instrument at any level. Whether you’re new to playing or have been playing for some time but never performed, this is a space for you. On our registration form you’ll self‑select your ability (Beginner, Intermediate, More Advanced).
So you don’t need to be a pro — just willing to learn, commit to a weekly session and have fun.
Q: What type of songs will we play, and what is the structure of the session?
A: The songs cover classics from rock, blues, funk, pop — familiar, fun material. We provide all the music from basic scores, reference tracks and performance notes (you won’t need to read detailed sheet music unless you want to).
Q: What if I need extra help?
A: No problem. Our experienced mentors are there to support you. If you’re feeling stuck, unsure of your part, or nervous about playing in a group for the first time — just chat with one of the tutors. We can arrange extra 1‑2‑1 time, or go over your part in more detail ahead of the session. The aim is to make you feel supported and confident.
Q: What performance options will there be?
A: As the term progresses, you’ll be working toward either a live gig in your local area or a tight recording of the material you’ve rehearsed. There’s no pressure, but the opportunity is there if you’re comfortable and want to step out of your comfort zone.
Performing in front of an audience with a band is what this is all about
Q: How much is each session?
A: Each session is £22, which covers the venue costs, tutor/mentor and admin costs. We set up a monthly subscription of £55, which covers 30 sessions a year. This saves you from having to pay out a lump sum at the start of a term. We run 10 sessions per term, and dates are set out at the start of a term.
There will be opportunities to perform live, and there won't be any extra cost to you (except your travel costs to a gig)
Q: Can I cancel, and what is the notice period?
A: We hope that you love the sessions, but appreciate that it might nt be for everyone. So all we ask is that you give us a month's notice. This allows us to try and replace your position in the band. to withdraw.
Q: Do I need to read music?
A: No, you don’t need to be able to read full written sheet music. We supply basic scores, reference tracks and performance notes so you can practise your part ahead of time. Of course, if you do read music and want to use that skill, great — but it’s not required.
Q: I have never played with anyone before, and I’m a bit nervous — is this for me?
A: Absolutely — you’re more than welcome. These sessions are specifically designed for adult musicians who may have never taken the stage before or even played in front of anyone. The tutors and fellow participants will be supportive. We’ll help you get comfortable, build your confidence and progress at a pace that works for you.
Q: If I miss a session, will I still have to pay?
A: Yes — as the venue and staff costs are paid for in advance, you remain responsible for your place in the session even if you personally cannot attend.
If your absence is unavoidable, contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll see whether we can support you by giving catch‑up options or advice for practising at home.
